Category:Computer-related introductions in 1982The present invention relates to drilling bits having the type of cutting structure commonly referred to as “fixed cutter” or “rotary drag” cutters. Specifically, the present invention relates to improvements in such bits which include means for resisting the torque which can result from the rotation of the bit in a bore hole in the earth.
Cutting elements, such as cutting blades or inserts, are fixedly secured to or embedded in cutting structures disposed on rotary drag bits, such as fixed cutter or drag bits as disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,974,940 to Skov et al., U.S. Pat. No. 6,457,563 to Gross et al., and U.S. Pat. No. 5,351,772 to Rowenhorst et al., and having the general features of a cone, a fixed cutter, a drag bit or a hybrid bit. Such cutting elements may be formed of superhard materials, such as polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDC), and are typically received in receptacles formed in the surface of a drag bit body. In the case of fixed cutter and hybrid bits, the cutting elements typically have cutting edges formed in the outer surfaces of the cutting elements. For drag bits, the cutting elements are typically mounted on the bit body by brazing or press fitting, and do not project outwardly from the outer surface of the bit body.
Torque is transferred from a bit through the drill string to the bit. The transfer of torque may occur at the point at which the drill string attaches to the bit, or at points along the bit and drill string. As torque is transferred to the bit, the forces applied to the surface of the cutting elements in contact with the formations being cut can lead to the bending or deflection of the cutting elements. This deflection may cause the cutting elements to dig deeper into the formation, or to strike other cutting elements and/or the sides of the bore hole, causing damage to the cutting elements
